About Me

I created It Happened on Long Island Books to share the rich history of this special island so may of us call home.

In the pages of these books you will meet people you may already know, like Martin Luther King, Jr.  You will also meet people not in the history books - until now.   People like like Oscar Bunn, Pyrrhus Concer, Jupiter Hammon, Levi Phillips, Helen Sells, Hub Edwards - their stories are the reason I write these books.  I am so excited for you to meet them.

I am a full-time lawyer, not a professional historian.  For this reason I  am especially careful in my research and sourcing. Each book is written with the generous help of educators, librarians, subject matter experts and museum curators.  The Sources section of this website contains citations and opportunities to dive deeper into the topics.

I see history as an active sport.  Listening is the first step, but then we are called to engage with history.  To me this means searching for lesser known stories and voices to fill in the gaps of what might be considered the "official story."  This is how we expand our understanding of the past, and hopefully get closer to the truth.  I invite you join me in this fun and meaningful adventure, for as I like to say, "We all have the right to write our own history."

Thanks for reading!
